The Art of a Successful Family Photoshoot

At Dragonfly Photography, we believe the best family photos come from connection, comfort, and a little thoughtful planning. Whether you’re booked for a mini session or a full family session, the goal is the same: relaxed moments, genuine smiles, and images that feel like you.

This guide will help you prepare for a successful family photoshoot. One that feels easy, enjoyable, and results in timeless images you’ll treasure for years.

1. Timing and Location Matter

One of the most important factors in a successful family photoshoot is choosing the right time and location. When young children are involved, planning around nap time and meal time is key. A rested, not hangry child is far more likely to be happy and comfortable in front of the camera.

Your location makes a big difference in how your photos feel. Consider the season, the light, and the mood you’re going for. A local beach, an open field, the rocky coastline of Maine, a wooded trail, or even your own home can all work beautifully.

2. Dress for the Season, Setting, and Comfort

Wardrobe is an important part of preparing for your family photo session, and comfort is just as important as style. Be sure to dress for the day’s temperature, a cold child rarely smiles.

Layers are your best friend, especially in New England where weather can change quickly. Adding thin layers underneath sweaters, dresses, or button-downs helps keep everyone warm without changing the look you are going for. Cozy kids are happy kids, and that comfort translates directly into more authentically happy photos.

If girls are wearing dresses, we strongly recommend adding shorts or bloomers underneath. This allows them to move, sit, twirl, and play comfortably without worrying about their dress having to stay put.

Choose outfits that complement the location and season while still feeling like yourselves. Soft neutrals and earth tones photograph beautifully year-round, while seasonal colors can add warmth and depth. Avoid busy patterns, neon colors, and large logos that can distract from faces and emotion. When you feel good and comfortable in what you’re wearing, it always shows in your photos.

3. Choose a Location That Fits Your Family’s Personality

Every family is different, and your session should reflect that. If your children are easily distracted, choosing a quieter location with fewer people and minimal noise can make a big difference. A calm environment helps kids stay focused and relaxed.

If your family loves to move, explore, and play, a more open location that allows for walking and interaction may be the perfect fit. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to family photography. What matters most is selecting a setting that supports your family’s natural dynamic.

4. Let Go of the Idea of “Perfect”

Some of the most meaningful family photos come from the in-between moments: the giggles, the cuddles, the quiet connections. Children don’t need to sit still or smile on command for beautiful images to happen.

At Dragonfly Photography, we gently guide sessions while allowing space for real moments to unfold. Trust the process and know that authenticity always photographs better than perfection.

5. Relax and Enjoy Your Family Photo Session

Your energy sets the tone for your session. When parents feel relaxed, children feel safe and confident. Think of your family photoshoot as time together, not a performance.

Whether you’ve chosen a mini session or a full family session, showing up ready to connect, laugh, and simply be present will always lead to the best results.

6. Displaying Your Images

Before your session, I want you to look around your home and choose a spot where you would love your photos to be displayed. Are you envisioning a large, beautiful family portrait or a collection of images that highlight the connection and love between you and your family? Thinking about this ahead of time will also help guide your session location. Consider your home’s style as well. Is it filled with soft neutrals, or is it more bold and colorful?
